In the stated aims of phase 1
restoration for Xixi wetlands clear ecological commitments were prominent including those of restoration and recreation of wetland ecological systems, rebuilding of the wetland food chain, realization of wildlife ecosystem diversity and stability, recovery of the self cleaning function of the wetlands, and the prevention and decrease of eutrophication. The goal in mind was that Xixi would indeed become "a living water park". Such aims were cited in as the most important goals for Xixi under the slogan of "Ecology First".
We are well on the way to meeting those goals. Bankside areas totaling 17,106 meters were cleaned up, 383 fish ponds recovered, and
reedbeds were re-established in the area around
Autumn Snow Temple, creating perhaps XixiĄ¯s strongest
ecological area. Various sites have been deliberately left un-constructed and set aside as special protection areas- the 3
ecological areas and ecological restoration areas incorporating over 3 sq km alone. An impressive
education center was set up including a demonstration of the constructed wetland water treatment system, laboratories, and multiple display features.
Tree protection was particularly stringent with Camphor,
Persimmon, Mulberry, Bamboo, Willow, Chinese Scholar, Lotus and Gardinia other typical special plants all protected or replanted. Some 2800 Persimmon trees alone were protected and retained on site. Areas of constructed wetlands or floating vegetation areas have been set aside to attempt natural water treatment. More than 270 biological species have been introduced to heal damaged natural systems.
